Five things we write, and nothing else

Wattle does not sell travel, life, pet or funeral cover. We write property and motor risk in Australia, and we would rather be good at that.

Why we are built this way

The Black Summer and the 2022 floods changed the maths for everyone

Two catastrophe seasons in three years reset what Australian property risk costs. Insurers responded by repricing. We responded by paying people to reduce the risk first.

Ninety minutes of hail, and a roof that had already been fixed

In the 2026 Boxing Day supercell, a Redbank Plains client lost every western-facing tile and both cars in a driveway. Two summers earlier she had taken a Wattle risk report, replaced the whirlybirds with sealed vents and had the gutters guarded. The claim still ran to five figures. It would have run to six.

  • Emergency make-safe booked the same night, before the claim was assessed.
  • One excess across the home and both vehicles, because it was one event.
  • Mitigation evidence already on file, so nothing had to be re-argued.

Australian properties are projected to be effectively uninsurable on current pricing by 2030 without mitigation. Our whole product is built to move houses out of that bracket, not to price them out of the market.

Illustrative figure, used here to explain our approach.

Priced by your address, not your postcode

Hazard is a property-level question. Two houses on the same street can sit on different sides of a flood overlay.

Harden the house. We will reprice the policy.

The resilience programme is the reason Wattle exists. Send us evidence of eligible mitigation work and we recalculate your hazard rating, not a marketing credit.

  • Bushfire. Ember guards, non-combustible decking, and what your BAL rating means for the premium.
  • Flood. Raised switchboards, flood-resilient internal linings, and a plain reading of your overlay.
  • Storm, hail and cyclone. Roof tie-downs, sealed vents, compliant shutters north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

What it is like when something actually happens

  • Robyn Ferreira standing on her property near Goondiwindi in overcast light
The assessor was on the property in under 48 hours, and she had actually read the mitigation report we filed two years earlier. Nobody had to explain the place to her twice.

  • Hail went through the roof and both cars in about four minutes. The claim was lodged that night from my phone and the emergency make-safe was booked before I went to bed.

  • The excess is written on the certificate in numbers you can read from across the room.

  • Renewal went up nine dollars. They rang to explain why before the letter arrived.

  • Third claim in six years up here. Third time they got the shutters signed off before the season.

  • They talked me out of a higher sum insured I did not need and into flood cover I did. That is not the sales call I expected.

The four things people ring us about

What is an excess, and when do I pay it?

An excess is the amount you contribute to a claim. On most Wattle policies you pay it once per claim, and if we are settling by payment we simply subtract it. Some events carry an additional excess, for example an earthquake excess, or a young driver excess on motor. Every excess that applies to you is printed on your certificate of insurance in figures, not buried in a schedule.

Is flood automatically included in home insurance?

Yes. Wattle home and contents policies include flood as a standard covered event, using the standard definition of flood set out in the Insurance Contracts Regulations. We do not sell a version with flood stripped out. If your address sits inside a mapped flood overlay we will tell you before you buy, and we will show you what the premium looks like with and without mitigation work done.

How does the resilience discount work?

Complete an eligible mitigation action, send us the evidence, and we reprice the policy at your next renewal. Roof tie-down upgrades, ember guards on gutters, raised switchboards and electrical, cyclone shutters and compliant flood-resilient internal linings all qualify. The reduction is a real repricing of your hazard rating, not a marketing credit, and it stays with the property.

How fast can I expect a decision?

Under the General Insurance Code of Practice we must decide a straightforward claim within ten business days of getting everything we need. In practice, most motor and contents claims are decided in under four. If your claim comes from a declared catastrophe, we run it through a separate fast lane, and we will tell you within one business day who your assessor is.
